“North-East Asia Regional Power Interconnection and Cooperation Forum 2018” to Take Place

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the Ministry of Energy of Mongolia, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the China Electricity Council, will hold the “North-East Asia Regional Power Interconnection and Cooperation Forum 2018” in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on October 31 and November 1.

 

° The event themed “the possibility of power interconnection in Northeast Asia and ways for regional cooperation in the field” will bring together government officials and civilian experts from the Republic of Korea, Japan, the People's Republic of China, the Russian Federation, and Mongolia, and delegates from international organizations, such as UNESCAP and the ADB.

 

2. The two-day Forum will cover the progress in feasibility studies on bilateral  power interconnections in Northeast Asia, such as between the ROK and China, between the ROK and Russia, between China and Russia, and between China and Mongolia, as well as multilateral power interconnections, such as among the ROK, China, Japan and Russia.

 

The session on October 31 will cover the progress in feasibility studies on bilateral and multilateral energy interconnections; and the progress in cooperation in Northeast Asia regarding power interconnections in the region. The session on November 1 will deal with ways for inter-governmental and multilateral cooperation concerning power interconnections in the region.

 

3. In a bid to seek transition to safe and clean energy, the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs has hosted the “Northeast Asia Energy Security Forum” since 2013 to discuss ways to build energy connectivity through which to provide abundant renewed energy of Russia and Mongolia to energy-consuming countries in the region. In 2018, the Ministry hosted a “Northeast Asia Gas Pipeline & Power Grid Cooperation Forum” in Seoul.

 

° The “North-East Asia Regional Power Interconnection and Cooperation Forum 2018” is expected to contribute to efforts to open a prospect for energy cooperation in the region.
