Vice Foreign Minister Lim Meets with Members of US House of Representatives

1. Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lim Sung-nam met with five members of the United States House of Representatives, including Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific Ted Yoho, who deals with issues on the Korean Peninsula, at the House of Representatives on the morning of September 19, and discussed issues on the Korean Peninsula, and key issues between the Republic of Korea and the United States.

2. Vice Minister Lim explained the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, including the inter-Korean summit being held in Pyeongyang. He said that such progress would not have been possible without close collaboration between the ROK and the US, and asked for continued interest and support from members of the US Congress, including Chairman Yoho, to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, and to establish peace on the Peninsula.

 

o Vice Minister Lim expressed concern over the US side’s move to tighten restrictions on auto imports on national security grounds. The Vice Minister went on to say that as the ROK is an ally of the US, the ROK’s auto exports do not threaten the security of the US, and asked the US Congress to play an active role in resolving the issue in a smooth manner.

 

3. Chairman Yoho said that the US Congress would continue to support a peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue, and the maintenance and development of the ROK-US alliance, and expressed hope that the two countries would step up cooperation on a range of regional issues, including issues on the Korean Peninsula.
