1. Former Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Vietnam Lee Hyuk assumed office as fourth Secretary-General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre on April 16.

The Secretary-General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre is appointed on the approval of the ROK and the ten member states of ASEAN. The Secretary-General’s term is three years and extendable only once.

- The first, second and third Secretaries-General were Cho Young-jai, Chung Hae-moon and Kim Young-sun, who assumed office in 2009, 2012 and 2015, respectively.

2. New Secretary-General Lee Hyuk is an ASEAN expert who has served as the Ambassador to Vietnam and to the Philippines, among others. He is expected to use his abundant experiences and broad human network in Southeast Asia to contribute to the efforts to enhance the ROK-ASEAN relations and to build an “ROK-ASEAN future community,” the former government’s vision of cooperation with the latter.

3. The ASEAN-Korea Centre is an international organization launched in 2009 to promote substantive cooperation between the two sides. Since its founding, the Center has served as a main channel for cooperation between the two, successfully conducting various projects designed to boost trade, investment, tourism, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
