1. Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano will visit the Republic of Korea from September 28 to 30, and meet with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha to discuss the North Korean nuclear issue, and ways for the ROK and the IAEA to work together.

2. Director General Amano’s visit to the ROK, which will come amid North Korea’s continued provocations following the sixth nuclear test, is expected to become an opportunity to discuss in depth ways for the two sides to cooperate to solve the North Korean nuclear problem. It is also expected to contribute to strengthening cooperation between the ROK and the IAEA on nuclear energy-related issues facing the ROK, including nuclear safety and the decommissioning of nuclear power plants.

o The ROK joined the IAEA as its original member in 1957, and is serving as a member of its Board of Governors for the 2017-2019 term, after serving on the Board for the 2015-2017 term.

3. In addition to his meeting with the Foreign Minister during his visit to the ROK, Director General Amano will also meet with key officials in the domestic nuclear industry, including the Minister of Science and ICT, and the Chairman of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission.
