1. The government of the Republic of Korea will provide humanitarian aid worth US$200,000 through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to Bangladesh, where heavy rains that started on August 12 inflicted severe damage in the country’s central and northern regions.

2. The floods, considered the worst in 40 years, caused massive casualties and property damage, leaving one third of Bangladesh’s territory under water, killing 173 people, displacing 6.9 million, and destroying 77,272 houses.

o The floods inflicted damage not only in Bangladesh, but across South Asia. The floods left about 1,200 people dead and affected some 41 million in Bangladesh, Nepal, India and other countries.

3. The ROK government’s assistance to Bangladesh, which comes after the government’s humanitarian assistance to Nepal, affected by the floods in South Asia, is expected to contribute to bringing stability to the lives of the displaced people in Bangladesh.

o On August 21, the ROK government decided to provide humanitarian aid to flood-affected Nepal. The government will send relief supplies, including hygiene products and emergency medications, to flood-affected areas in the country.

4. The government of the ROK, a responsible middle-power country in the international community, will continue to expand humanitarian assistance to join the efforts to help countries and their people affected by natural disasters to recover from the damage.
