1. The Republic of Korea has been re-elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for the 2018-2020 term and the Commission of the Status of Women (CSW) for the 2018-2022 term in the elections held in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)'s Coordination and Management Meetings on April 19 (New York time).

o The ROK has served on the UNICEF Executive Board and the Commission of the Status of Women since 1988 and 1994, respectively.

2. The ROK’s re-election to the UNICEF Executive Board and the CSW shows that the ROK’s efforts so far to improve the rights of children and women are highly acclaimed by the international community, and that the international community expects the ROK to continue to make contributions and expand its roles.

o In particular, UNICEF is the ROK’s major cooperation partner in the area of grants aid, which has held bilateral policy consultations with the ROK every year since 2004. In addition, the UNICEF office opened on April 11, marking the third of its kind among donor countries after those in Japan (Tokyo) and Belgium (Brussels). In this regard, the ROK’s re-election to the UNICEF Executive Board is expected to serve as another opportunity to further expand and develop the bilateral cooperative relations in a future-oriented way.
