ROK Foreign Ministry Conducting in Kenya and Uganda One of its “People as Public Diplomats” Projects for 2016

1. One of the Foreign Ministry’s “people as public diplomats projects for 2016” is under way in Kenya and Uganda from August 29 till September 6, led by the “A.S.K (African Sings Korean Soul)” team, which has been implementing such projects for the last three years and thereby leading cultural exchanges between the Republic of Korea and Africa.

° The team is staging joint performances with musicians from the African countries, which are being broadcast live online through YouTube and the team’s SNS accounts.

2. The performances were staged in large shopping malls and squares in Nairobi and Kisumu, Kenya, on August 29 and September 1, respectively, as well as Jinja and Kampala on September 1-2 and 5, respectively, with African musicians introducing Korean culture and music to the locals. The performances were aired live online.

3. In addition, the “A.S.K” team took part in “NYege Nyege,” one of the largest music festivals in Africa that was held in Jinja, Uganda, on September 1 and 2, staging a K-pop concert as well as joint impromptu performances with musicians from 18 African countries.

4. The Foreign Ministry’s “people as public diplomats” projects, which mark the fourth round in 2016, are public diplomacy projects on Korea planned and undertaken by ROK nationals as civilian diplomats. They are selected on an annual basis from those submitted, and a notice inviting applications from the public will be issued in December.
