1. First Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam attended the Meeting on Afghanistan with Resolute Support Operational Partner Nations at the level of Heads of State and Government in Warsaw, Poland, on July 9.

° The Meeting on Afghanistan brought together leaders and high-level officials from 40-odd countries, including those participating in NATO’s Resolute Support Mission (RSM), Afghanistan, the Republic of Korea and Japan; and delegates from such international organizations as the EU and the UN. In the meeting, the participants discussed the international community’s assistance to and role for the Afghan military and police from 2018 till 2020.

2. At the meeting, the participating countries drew a common understanding that in order for Afghanistan not to become a hotbed of terrorism but to achieve stability, the country should further strengthen the capability of its military and police. They agreed to make active efforts to that end.

3. At the meeting, Vice Minister Lim expressed the commitment of the government of the ROK as a responsible member of the international community to join the efforts. In that vein, he announced the ROK’s plan to contribute an annual 45 million US dollars from 2018 to 2020 to help beef up the capability of the Afghan military and police.

4. Amid the rapid growth in the number of ROK nationals engaged in activities overseas, the ROK government’s continued support for the aforementioned work is expected to contribute to efforts to preemptively fight terrorism and violent extremism, to prevent the production of refugees and to protect human rights.
