ROK and Japan Conduct Programs to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Normalization of Diplomatic Relations between the Two Countries

1. The “Treaty on Basic Relations between the Republic of Korea and Japan” entered into force fifty years ago today, on December 18, 1965. With this year marking the 50th anniversary of the normalization of the ROK-Japan diplomatic relations, the governments of the two countries have held a range of commemorative events to help the people of the two countries better understand each other and improve friendship.

o The governments and the private sectors of the two countries have hosted more than 410 events in 2015 under the theme “Let's Open a New Future Together” in a variety of sectors, including culture, arts, academia and sports.

2. Celebratory programs led by the governments of the two countries include a reception marking the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations (June 22, Seoul/Tokyo); a joint academic conference (June 17-19, Jeju Island); and the Korea-Japan Festival (September 19-20, Seoul/ September 26-27, Tokyo). Cultural events, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have also taken place, including a Jo Su-mi gala concert (June 22, Tokyo), and the National Orchestra of Korea’s “Arirang Fantasy (December 9, Tokyo).”

o In particular, President Park Geun-hye herself attended the reception marking the 50th anniversary of the normalization of the ROK-Japan diplomatic relations in Seoul on June 22. At the reception, President Park stressed that the two countries need to make this year a turning point in the ROK-Japan relations to move forward together towards a new future of cooperation and co-prosperity.

o Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se visited Japan from June 21 to 22. During his visit, Foreign Minister Yun met with his Japanese counterpart (June 21), paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Abe (June 22), and attended the reception marking the 50th anniversary of the normalization of the ROK-Japan diplomatic relations in Tokyo on June 22. At the reception, he read President Park’s congratulatory message on her behalf.

3. The ROK government notes with appreciation that various programs have been conducted by the public and private sectors in order to facilitate exchanges and cooperation between the people of the two countries and deepen mutual friendship and understanding, with this year marking the 50th anniversary of the normalization of the ROK-Japan diplomatic relations. Building upon these achievements, the ROK government will continue to work to further promote friendship between the people of the two countries next year.
