ROK and Mongolian Presidents Exchange Celebratory Letters to Mark 30th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

1. President Moon Jae-in and President of Mongolia Khaltmaa Battulga exchanged celebratory letters on March 26 to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and Mongolia.


2. President Moon noted with appreciation that since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1990, the two countries have steadily developed cooperative relations for the past 30 years in a range of areas, including economic, social and cultural affairs, based on their firm trust and friendship.


o In addition, President Moon, noting that Mongolia is a key cooperation partner for the ROK government’s New Northern Policy, expressed hope that the two countries will further strengthen cooperation in many areas, including environment, education and infrastructure, through robust high-level exchanges, and thereby develop their “Comprehensive Partnership” into a more mature and future-oriented one.


3. President Battulga took note that the ROK and Mongolia have developed the bilateral relations into the Comprehensive Partnership over the last 30 years on the basis of their shared values of human rights and freedom, as well as democracy and the market economy, and that the people of the two countries have cemented stronger bond and friendship.


o Furthermore, President Battulga expressed appreciation for the ROK government’s continued support for Mongolia’s social and economic development, and said that Mongolia will continue to develop mutually-beneficial cooperative relations by participating in the ROK’s New Northern Policy.


4. In the celebratory letters, the Presidents of the two countries shared the understanding that the two countries, while overcoming the current COVID-19 situation wisely, will pursue various activities that the two countries have planned in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.


o The two countries have designated the year 2020 as the “Republic of Korea-Mongolia Friendship Year” and made a joint logo to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year. The two countries will further deepen and expand mutual understanding and exchanges between the people of the two countries through various celebratory programs.


o The joint logo made in celebration of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties shows the strong friendship, trust and cooperation between the two countries by harmonizing the Taegeuk pattern, symbolizing the ROK, with “Soyombo,” a symbol of Mongolia.


5. To mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the Speakers of the parliaments, the Prime Ministers and the Foreign Ministers of the two countries also exchanged celebratory letters, in which they commended the progress in enhancing bilateral relations and affirmed their commitment to cooperation between the two countries.
