ROK-U.S. Foreign Ministerial Meeting


1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha had a bilateral meeting with Secretary of State of the United States (U.S.) Mike Pompeo on the morning of January 14, during which the two sides discussed matters of mutual interest, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the alliance issues, and the current situations in Northeast Asia as well as in the Middle East. 
 
° The Minister and the Secretary shared assessments of the current situation regarding the Korean Peninsula issues and exchanged views on ways to maintain the momentum of the dialogue process for denuclearization in steadfast collaboration between the ROK and the U.S. and to resume U.S.-North Korea dialogue, as well as on inter-Korean relations.


° The two sides, sharing the understanding that the ROK and the U.S. have deepened the cooperation in a mutually beneficial way, had an in-depth discussion on further strengthening the ROK-U.S. alliance.
 
° The Minister and the Secretary also shared concern over the rising tensions in the Middle East and agreed to work with the international community toward an early restoration of peace and stability in the region.


2. The Minister and the Secretary took note of the active high-level exchanges between the two countries since the beginning of the year and agreed to continue communication at all levels on the alliance issues and the further enhancement of the ROK-U.S. relations.
