1. On the occasion of the 74th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha met with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict Pramila Patten at 15:00-15:50, September 25, during which the two sides exchanged views on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in responding to and preventing sexual violence in conflict.

2. Minister Kang extended appreciation to Special Representative Patten for attending the 1st international conference hosted by the Republic of Korea (ROK) in Seoul on July 2-3 as part of the efforts to implement its “Action with Women and Peace” Initiative; offered congratulation on the 10th anniversary in 2019 of the establishment of the mandate of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict; and voiced hope that the Special Representative would continue efforts to eradicate sexual violence in conflict.

° The Minister also expressed hope that with the year 2020 marking the 20th anniversary of the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1325, the two sides would further strengthen cooperation in responding to and preventing sexual violence in conflict.

3. Special Representative Patten commended the ROK for holding the 1st International Conference on Action with Women and Peace and for other active contributions to the international community’s discussions on the Women, Peace and Security agenda, including sexual violence in conflict. She went on to voice hope that bilateral cooperation would continue to expand in the field.

4. The meeting with Special Representative Patten, which came about two and a half months after the one held on the occasion of the 1st International Conference on Action with Women and Peace, is seen to have served as an opportunity for the two sides to exchange views on such matters as the UN activities to implement the Women, Peace and Security agenda as well as an opportunity to reaffirm the two sides’ commitment to continued cooperation.
