1. Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, together with US Secretary of State Pompeo, hosted a briefing session on the situation on the Korean Peninsula for Ambassadors from UN Security Council member states at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the UN on July 20. In the briefing session, the two top diplomats shared with the Ambassadors efforts of the ROK and the US to achieve a complete denuclearization and a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

° The event brought together some 40 people, including Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo of the UN as well as Ambassadors to the UN from member states of the UN Security Council and Japan.

2. In the briefing session, Minister Kang informed the participants of the progress in the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in the inter-Korean relations since the recent inter-Korean and US-North Korea summit talks; and asked for support and cooperation of the UN Security Council in the course toward the denuclearization of North Korea and the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula.

° The Ambassadors from member states of the UN Security Council, recognizing the need for the Security Council to be united in seeking to resolve Korean Peninsula issues, including through sanctions against North Korea, agreed to work closely together to that end.

3. The event co-hosted by the ROK Foreign Minister and the US Secretary of State is seen to have served as an opportunity to demonstrate close coordination between the two countries toward a complete denuclearization of North Korea and a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, and to win the Security Council’s commitment to contribute constructively to the efforts to resolve Korean Peninsula issues.
