ROK and Cuba Hold 1st Foreign Ministerial Meeting since Launches of New Governments

1. On the sidelines of the 37th session of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Cuba, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha met bilaterally with her Cuban counterpart, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, on May 10.

 

2. In their meeting, the two Ministers exchanged views on matters of mutual concern, including ways to enhance the Republic of Korea-Cuba relations and step up substantive cooperation, as well as situations on the Korean Peninsula and in other parts of the world.

 

° In particular, the two sides, taking note of the steady increase in exchanges and cooperation across the board, including economy, culture, sports and development, agreed to continue working together in a mutually beneficial manner.

 

° The two sides also agreed to consult further with each other on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in September 2018 to seek ways to enhance bilateral ties.

 

3. Minister Kang also met with Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment Rodrigo Malmierca for a discussion on ways to promote economic and trade cooperation between the two countries as well as to increase Korean companies’ investment in Cuba.

 

4. Minister Kang visited the Korean Descendant Association in Cuba, during which she met the Association’s chair Antonio Kim, Serjio Lim, a descendant of Korean independence activist Lim Cheon-taek and others in Cuba as well as Hallyu (Korean Wave, or Korean pop culture) fans and asked them to play a bridging role toward a closer ROK-Cuba relations.
