Foreign Minister Meets with US Senator Warren

1. Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha met with Elizabeth Warren, a Senator of the Democratic Party serving on the Senate Armed Services Committee, on March 29, during which the two sides exchanged views on the situations on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.

 

Senator Warren is on a visit to the Republic of Korea from March 28 till 30 as part of her tour of Northeast Asian countries. Her visit to the ROK marks her first official one to the country.

 

2. Minister Kang hailed the visit to the ROK by Senator Warren, an influential figure in the US Senate, which came at a time when the Korean Peninsula is undergoing a number of changes in its situation; and extended appreciation to the Senator for constantly voicing her support at the Senate for the efforts to peacefully and diplomatically resolve the North Korean nuclear issue and to beef up the ROK-US alliance.

 

As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Warren has actively engaged in congressional activities on Korea Peninsula-related issues: In January 2018, she co-sponsored the resolution in support of the PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games; in October 2017, she co-introduced a bill for the prevention of a preemptive war against North Korea; in October 2017, she sent a co-signed letter to the President calling for diplomatic efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue; and she sent a letter in February 2018 and another in September 2017 to the President urging for an early appointment of an Ambassador to the ROK.

 

3. Senator Warren, mentioning that the purpose of her first visit to the ROK was to learn more about the ROK-US alliance and the situation on the Korean Peninsula, voiced hope that close relations will be maintained with the ROK.

 

° In addition, the Senator commended the ROK government for its recent, active role in the efforts to create a momentum of dialogue, including on the occasion of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, toward a peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue.

 

4. Minister Kang and Senator Warren exchanged views on ways to support women with their social advancement efforts and on other issues regarding women.
