[Climate Change] ROK-Russia Joint Committee on Environmental Cooperation to Hold its 11th Meeting

1. The Republic of Korea-Russia Joint Committee on Environmental Cooperation will hold its eleventh meeting in Moscow, Russia, on December 6 to discuss ways to step up bilateral environmental cooperation. On December 5, the third meeting of the Joint Committee’s subcommittee on the conservation of endangered wildlife species will be held in conjunction with the Joint Committee meeting.

° The ROK and Russian head delegates to the Joint Committee meeting are Director-General for Climate Change and Environmental Affairs Lee Hyung-jong of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Director for International Cooperation Inamov Nuritdin of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, respectively.

2. In the Joint Committee meeting, the two countries will inform each other of their respective environmental policies; review the progress in the 13 cooperation projects in a wide range of fields, including ecosystem, environmental industry, air pollution and marine environment; and discuss new cooperation projects.

3. The two sides will also exchange views on ways to step up environmental cooperation in Northeast Asia, including in accordance with the Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP) and the North-East Asian Sub-Regional Programme for Environmental Cooperation (NEASPEC), as well as global environmental cooperation on such issues as climate change.

4. The meeting of the ROK-Russia Joint Committee on Environmental Cooperation has been held in the two countries on an annual and rotational basis pursuant to the bilateral Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Environment concluded in 1994, playing a role in the two countries’ efforts to undertake substantive environmental cooperation.
