Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs Holds Consultation with U.S. Chief Negotiator for North Korea Nuclear Issue and Has Meetings with U.S. and UN Officials on Occasion of UN General Assembly Session

1. On the occasion of the 74th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, Amb. Lee Do-hoon, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, had consultations with Mr. Stephen Biegun, U.S. Special Representative for North Korea, and Mr. David Stilwell, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the United States (U.S.), on September 25. The two sides exchanged views on key matters of mutual interest between the ROK and the U.S., including nuclear and other North Korean issues.

 

° In particular, in the meeting with Special Representative Biegun, the two sides discussed ways for the ROK and the U.S. to work together toward complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, including an early resumption of working-level negotiations between the U.S. and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

 

2. Amb. Lee also met with Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs of the UN, and shared assessments of the recent developments on the Korean Peninsula and exchanged views on how the UN can contribute to progress in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula.
