1. Amb. Lee Do-hoon, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, held a meeting with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor Morgulov in their capacity as top negotiators of the Republic of Korea and Russia on the North Korean nuclear issue at the invitation of the Deputy Foreign Minister in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on March 19.

2. In the meeting, which took place about three months after the last meeting of the ROK and Russian top negotiators on the North Korean nuclear issue in Seoul in December 2018, the two sides shared their assessments of the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, including the results of the second United States-Democratic People’s Republic of Korea summit, and exchanged in-depth views on ways to work together to help make the progress in denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

o The ROK and Russian sides agreed to continue to make joint efforts to achieve complete denuclearization and establish a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, and shared the view that countries concerned, including the ROK and Russia, need to continue to closely work together to make substantive progress through US-North Korea dialogue following the second US-North Korea summit.

3. The two sides took note of the close communications underway at each level between the two countries, including the ROK-Russia Foreign Ministers’ meeting (Feb. 15) held on the occasion of the Munich Security Conference last month, and agreed to continue communications and collaboration at various levels.
