General Debate of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C-34)

On February 18, 2020, Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Ham Sang-Wook participated in the General Debate of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C-34), and highlighted 3 main areas in which the Special Committee should place its focus on this year to improve the effectiveness of peacekeeping.

Ambassador Ham emphasized that under the closer partnerships among relevant stakeholders, the Special Committee should take advantage of the 2021 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference in Seoul to translate the shared commitments of the Secretary-General’s A4P (Action for Peacekeeping) initiative, make concrete recommendations to enhance the capabilities of peacekeepers through providing adequate equipment, training, medical support and new technologies, and train the peacekeepers to better engage with the local communities, in line with the HIPPO Report introduced in 2015.

Republic of Korea currently more than 600 peacekeepers deployed in South Sudan and Lebanon.
