Commemorative event to mark the day of the signing of

the Charter of the United Nations

Wednesday, 26 June 2019, General Assembly Hall

Madam President,

Allow me first to express my sincere appreciation to you for hosting today’s ceremony. Your initiative to mark the day of signing the UN Charter is both timely and pertinent to our preparations for the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations next year.

Today’s event inspired me to reflect on the principles and values that the founders of the UN aspired to enshrine in the Charter 74 years ago. The founders’ strong commitment to peace, development and human rights through tolerance and cooperation still resonates today.

Madam President,

The signature ceremony is particularly meaningful to me as I look back on the history of my own country. The Republic of Korea was not one of the founding members of the United Nations when the Charter was signed in 1945, but it is a country whose very existence is a living testament to the relevance and success of the United Nations. Had there been no help from the UN from the time of its foundation, the Republic of Korea as it stands today would not be existent. We have grown under the guidance of the UN and aspirations enshrined in the Charter. We are, therefore, committed to playing a greater role in rebuilding the confidence in the UN and multilateralism as well as in helping to shape the world the founders of the UN dreamed of 74 years ago in San Francisco. I thank you. /End/
